Shoring and Excavation Training (SET)

Course description:

Earth, when cut into, instantly seeks to heal itself – which can result in an excavation failure unless proper procedures are followed.  A major collapse of the side of an excavation can injure or kill workers.  Even a small volume of soil can suffocate, crush, or trap a worker.

Course objectives:

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legislated requirements pertaining to shoring and excavations including WorkSafeBC Regulation Part 20:  Construction, Excavation and Demolition
  • Understand soil mechanics and soil classification as well as the effects of water on soil
  • Determine hazards and identify courses of action through effective pre-planning
  • Understand terminology and preventative measures (Sloping and Benching)
  • Read and understand manufactured shoring Tabulated data (Engineer Specifications) and site specific applications of tab data
  • Identify the various types of shoring and the applications for each system

Note:

This is classroom training. Hands-on training is provided in the SET Applied Field Practices (AFP) course. Find out more at https://www.bcmsa.ca/course-catalogue/set-applied-field-practices-afp/.

While onboarding some TFTs (Temporary Full Timers) to RFTs (Regular Full Timers), we asked them how they felt their first year at the city went including how they felt about the quality of the training provided. One of the workers stated that they were especially impressed with the Shoring Training. He said “I give the instructor a 10/10…he was excellent…and it really stuck in my brain out in the field!” Janice Williams, OHS Superintendent – Sewer Operations, City of Vancouver
