Hazard Awareness & Recognition for Municipal Inspectors

Presented in conjunction with EHS Partnerships.

Municipal building and bylaw inspectors are exposed to a number of potential hazards in their work. We have created a 7-hour course to help inspectors recognize these hazards, and perform in-field risk assessments to improve their safety.

This course is provided on an as-requested basis. Contact BCMSA to set up a session for your staff! View the poster Hazard Awareness & Recognition for Municipal Inspectors.

Entering & Working in Confined Spaces (Theory and Practical)

There are literally hundreds of confined spaces in every municipality, from manholes, to underground chambers, to pool maintenance areas.  The list is seemingly endless.  Confined spaces can be deadly, if proper entry procedures are not followed.

Contact us if you’d like to host this training in your organization.

Lockout

Whenever unexpected startup of equipment or machinery or a release of energy can
harm the workers who are running or maintaining the equipment or machinery, it must
be de-energized and locked out.

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to identify various sources of
energy that could harm them, including electrical, mechanical, stored and nuclear
energy, and will understand the use of tools and techniques to ensure their safety.

Shoring & Excavation Training

Earth, when cut into, instantly seeks to heal itself – which can result in an excavation failure unless proper procedures aren’t followed.  A major collapse of the side of an excavation can injure or kill workers.  Even a small volume of soil can suffocate, crush, or trap a worker.

Participants in this one-day course will understand the following:

  • General hazards around excavations
  • Pre-planning
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Locating and marking underground utilities
  • Understanding shoring systems, sloping/stepping
  • OH&S Regulation pertaining to excavations

With a hands-on component, participants will be able to identify which passive or active shoring systems are best for various applications and will see, first-hand, how they are used.

Workplace Violence Prevention

Local government workers are subjected to violence from non-workers on a regular basis, because of the work we do, or simply because of who we work for.  This fast paced, interactive session will help participants identify potentially violent situations, and will provide them with real-life usable skills to defuse the situations.

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments

When your assignment is to drain the swamp, one of the hazards is posed by the alligators in the swamp… the risk depends on whether the alligator has been fed recently.

In order to eliminate or reduce hazards, we need to first identify them. In this half-day session, participants will learn how to perform hazard identifications in their workplace, and quantify the risk level so that priorities can be established to eliminate or reduce the hazard.
