Shoring and Excavation Training (SET)
Course description:
Earth, when cut into, instantly seeks to heal itself – which can result in an excavation failure unless proper procedures are followed. A major collapse of the side of an excavation can injure or kill workers. Even a small volume of soil can suffocate, crush, or trap a worker.
Course objectives:
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the legislated requirements pertaining to shoring and excavations including WorkSafeBC Regulation Part 20: Construction, Excavation and Demolition
- Understand soil mechanics and soil classification as well as the effects of water on soil
- Determine hazards and identify courses of action through effective pre-planning
- Understand terminology and preventative measures (Sloping and Benching)
- Read and understand manufactured shoring Tabulated data (Engineer Specifications) and site specific applications of tab data
- Identify the various types of shoring and the applications for each system
